Honestly, I was pretty excited when Seiko recently launched a remake of the very first Seiko 5 Sports from 1968. Until then, what I've seen is a faithful recreation of an iconic watch, at least on paper. Seiko 5 Sports was, and still is, a very important collection for Seiko, and I'm sure almost all of us have touched it at some point in our lives. It is widely regarded as an entry-level mechanical watch that introduced many people into the world of mechanical watchmaking. While some may be leaving, I still love a good Seiko every now and then. As we explained before, the Seiko 5 line was launched in 1963 and the more powerful Seiko 5 Sports in 1968. All watches under the Seiko 5 collection are equipped with mechanical movements, date display in a single window, water resistance, recessed crowns and sturdy bracelets or straps. These 5 elements are still valid today and have cemented the 5 collection as one of the most important collections in Seiko history. The movement-oriented design of the 1968 5 also ushered in some innovations, such as a new mainspring and anti-shock system and a magic lever for more efficient winding of the movement. With that in mind, the new SPRK17 luxury replica Watches rounds out the pack, celebrating the 55th anniversary of the original Seiko 5 Sports in style.

As with any good replica, the case is nearly identical in shape, proportions and finishes to the 1968 model. Of course, the material quality has improved over the years, but it still has the iconic tonneau-shaped design with covered lugs, bi-directional bezel and hidden crown. Design elements such as polished half-moon scallops at 12 feet and 6 feet are present, with the same charm as it did 55 years ago. With a diameter of 39.5mm and a height of 12.5mm, it's fairly compact and measures 43.1mm lug-to-lug, making it look and feel really good on the wrist. The drilled lugs also add a vintage flair, and you can easily swap the bracelet for a watch strap if you wish. With 100m of water resistance, you also don't have to worry about a downpour or jumping into a pool or ocean.

The matte black dial is perhaps a bit basic, but it's the same as the one in the original Seiko 5 Sports from 1968. The hour markers are coated with LumiBrite and "integrated" with the silver minute track on the outer edge of the dial. dial. The shape, color, and proportions are all copied directly from the 1968 version, very cool! Faceted hour and minute hands, red lollipop central seconds hand, faceted frame around day-date window, and vintage Seiko 5 logo at noon. The only change to the dial is the printing on the lower part, which now reads "Sports" in blue and "Automatic – 24 Jewels – 10BAR" in silver. Under the solid bottom cover is the Seiko Caliber 4R36 automatic movement that we are all too familiar with. This workhorse machine is produced entirely in-house and vibrates at 21,600vph. A power reserve of 41 hours is more than acceptable, but at some point it would be nice to see an improvement in power reserve, say to get you through the weekend. Then again, this is a perfect watch for the weekend or any day of the week, so I'm not complaining too much. The movement indicates the time in hours, minutes and seconds, and of course the day of the week and date.

The Seiko 5 Sports 55th Anniversary Limited Edition SRPK17 (that's what the name says) comes with a 20mm wide stainless steel bracelet with flat links featuring a brushed top surface and polished sides. It tucks under the lug portion of the case, effectively reducing the size of the watch when worn on the wrist. The three-part folding clasp fits perfectly to the shape of the bracelet and is engraved with "Seiko". Limited to 15,555 pieces, and that's not a typo, the watch comes in a special box that also recreates the atmosphere of the original.

Now, I really like this watch so much that I want to buy one for myself. I love its classic look, it's iconic, and as our editor Rebecca put it in our introductory article, it's "the face of a thousand ships that have been launched". This watch is perfect for almost every occasion (except maybe a red carpet event) and can be worn worry-free. It's durable, well built, and packs a lot of character. It's also very reasonably priced, so to me, it feels like a no-brainer.
